Viva Florida 500 Time Capsule
The Florida Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services has launched a project in honor of Florida's 500 year anniversary- the 2013 Viva Florida 500 commemoration. Viva Florida 500 is a once-in-our-lifetime opportunity to reposition and expand the perception of Florida by highlighting 500 years of history and unmatched cultural diversity – a claim no other state can make.
To encourage activities in every community in each of Florida's 67 counties, the Department has provided a Viva Florida 500 Time Capsule to every county library in the state. County Commissioners are also being contacted and asked to work with their communities on the project.
Flat Ponce & Friends Educational Activity
Teachers, parents, librarians, and learners of all ages, join us in commemorating Florida's history by sharing the stories of five great Floridians with this fun, educational and easy project. All you need is a printer, a pair of scissors and a Popsicle stick to bring your character to life. Once you've printed out one famous Floridian (or the whole famous family!), cut him or her out on the dotted line and glue their picture to a Popsicle stick. Now you're ready to travel with your flat friend! Please take him or her with you as you go to your favorite beach, museum, restaurant, historical site, or your own secret Florida destination! Snap a picture with your character, and share your learning experience with us on Face Book (Viva Florida 500) or Twitter (@VivaFlorida500) with a sentence or two about your new friend.
